Tax lien certificates are a little known investment that can yield high returns, if you learn the rules and avoid the risks and pitfalls.  Properties include land, acreage, residential property, commercial property, agricultural property, recreation property, cabins, mobile homes and manufactured homes.  You choose the properties that you are interested in.  

You pay the taxes due to the county and earn interest while you hold the tax lien certificate.  If the property owner pays the back taxes due to the county, you earn interest on your investment.  If the property owner does not pay the back taxes due, within a certain time limit, known as the redemption period, you can apply for a tax deed or treasurers deed to become the new owner of the property.

You must do adequate research (due diligence) on the real estate that is behind the tax lien certificate. 
Is it a valuable property or are there problems with the property making it worthless or of little value?
Is it a property that you would like to own if the current owner fails to pay the back taxes due?
Is it a property that you can sell, rent, develop or use if you become the new owner?

You can buy tax lien certificates using money in your IRA or other retirement account.  This helps to build your wealth in a tax deferred account or a tax free account, such as a Roth IRA.  It is an alternative investment.  You can buy tax lien certificates in your home town or county, (if available) or in many states and counties across the USA.  With more counties now holding tax sales on the Internet, you can bid from home without travel time and costs.
